For all graduate programs, students must review the departmental minimal technical standards to ensure they meet the minimum capabilities to perform in the professions. The standards are accessible on the department website at http://www.ecu.edu/cs-dhs/csd/studentResources.cfm.

Doctoral programs offered by the department are designed for advanced scholars with interest in communication sciences and disorders. Students may enroll in either the doctor of philosophy (PhD) in rehabilitation sciences program or in the doctor of audiology (AuD) program. Enrolled PhD students are required to take course work in a science core, which may include computer applications to the fields, physiology, acoustics, or language science (speech-language pathology concentration), a support core taken across disciplines, a statistics core, and an area of concentration developed with the major professor in consultation with the program committee. PhD students are involved in research from the outset, and are expected to conduct research leading to empirical, methodological, and/or theoretical advances in their field of study. Following completion of didactic and preliminary research requirements, students are expected to conduct research that will be included in their dissertation and defended publicly. Students in the AuD program begin their program with science based courses, as well as clinical methodology courses, and progress through the program to a clinical residency experience.
