Scholars Programs

Business Scholars Program

The Business Scholars Program is a competitive academic program jointly sponsored by the College of Business and the Honors College. Under this program, up to ten seats in the MBA/MSA program are reserved (four years in advance) for selected students who are North Carolina residents entering ECU as freshmen in ECU’s Honors College.

Admission Requirements

Students wishing to be considered for the Business Scholars Program will first need to be accepted into the Honors College. Admission to the Honors College at East Carolina University is competitive and by invitation. Students wishing to be considered for the Business Scholars Program will first need to meet the following minimum eligibility criteria to receive an invitation to apply:

  1. Apply to East Carolina University (ECU) by the priority deadline (November 15)
  2. Meet the following minimum criteria within both the standardized test and GPA categories:
  • Minimum unweighted GPA of 3.5 and/or minimum weighted GPA of 4.0
  • Minimum mathematics/critical reading combined score of 1200 on the old SAT, and/or minimum composite score of 1270 on the new SAT, and/or minimum ACT composite score of 27

Super-scoring is acceptable for the ACT. Super-scoring is also acceptable for the SAT but can only be completed within the same SAT version and not between old and new SATs. Test score eligibility will be assessed based on scores received by the institution as of November 15. Due to the timeline employed by College Board and ACT, we are unable to guarantee receipt of scores from any exams after October 2 to determine Honors College eligibility. Students using the October ACT exam must self-report scores to ECU Admissions in order to guarantee receipt by the aforementioned deadline. This process is outlined on the Honors College admissions webpage.

Students who meet the above criteria will receive an invitation by mail to complete the Honors College application. The postmarked deadline for submitting the completed Honors College application and associated materials is December 1. Applications are reviewed throughout December and January with a targeted notification date of January 31 for those students who are admitted into the Honors College.

Program

Students who are awarded a position in the Business Scholars Program must maintain certain academic standards and participate in various activities to remain eligible for their seat in the Business Scholars entering class. These requirements include:

  1. earning a minimum GPA (both overall and in business courses) of 3.5
  2. maintaining “an acceptable level of personal deportment”
  3. participating in all required group and enrichment activities (periodic meetings with COB mentor, leadership roles, lunches/special events with COB leadership, speakers, Advisory Council members, etc.)

Students in the Business Scholars Program who remain eligible and interested will complete an application to the ECU MBA or MSA program in the first semester of their senior year and will be exempt from the supplemental application fee and the Graduate Management Admission Test requirement. They will receive a letter of acceptance that will enable them to enter the MBA or MSA program after graduation.

Music Scholars Program

East Carolina University’s Honors College and School of Music have partnered to provide a unique opportunity for outstanding students who wish to major in music. The Music Scholars Program offers a supplemental $3,000 scholarship ($1,500 is disbursed each semester for eight semesters) to students who are entering ECU’s Honors College majoring in music. The scholarship is a four-year award that totals $12,000 above and beyond the Honors College scholarship equal to the cost of in-state tuition and includes special leadership and community engagement and mentorship experiences. Freshmen Music Scholars will live and learn in a collegial residence environment.

The School of Music at ECU is one of the premier music schools in the Southeast with accreditations from the National Association of Schools of Music and American Music Therapy Association, an intentionally small and high-quality student body, and some of the finest facilities, resources, and performances in the state. Students who are interested in this elite opportunity must be accepted into the Honors College and the School of Music, which requires a performance audition in addition to the Honors College application.
