The bachelor of music in music degree has three concentrations - music therapy, music performance, and music theory-composition.

Minimum degree requirement is 128 s.h. as follows:

1. General education requirements including those listed below - 40 s.h.

3. Concentrations - 58 s.h.


(Choose one.) 

a. Music therapy concentration


 This curriculum has been approved by the American Music Therapy Association and completion confers eligibility to take the national certification examination given by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Performance groups - 7 s.h.


  • Minimum of 5 semesters large ensemble
  • Minimum of 2 semesters small ensemble

Music majors may count only two semester hours of the Marching Band Field Experience (MUSC 1706 , 1 s.h.) for large ensemble credit. Marching Band (MUSC 1705 , 2 s.h.) may not count toward large ensemble credit for music majors. Music majors taking more than 2 s.h. of MUSC 1706 or 1705 must sign a release form to be made available in the music office. The form will help clarify that hours above the required 2 s.h. of MUSC 1706 will not count as part of the music education degree plan at ECU, and that these extra hours may lead to additional hours on a student’s transcript before graduation.

Note:

Approval of student’s major applied instructor and ensemble directors is required for ensemble registration.

Applied music - 22 s.h.


(guitar, keyboard, percussion, strings or wind, voice)

Applied major - 14 s.h.

  • No more than 6 semesters of 1000-level applied and 3 semesters of 3000-level applied
  • Present a half senior recital
Applied minor - 8 s.h.

A student who is exempt from any applied minor courses specified must take other applied minor courses to complete the total required hours.

  • No more than 6 semesters of 1000-level applied and 4 semesters of 3000-level applied

  • Minimum of 4 semesters large ensemble
  • 6 s.h. accompanying and/or chamber music

Sacred music, organ


Applied major - 16 s.h.

  • Minimum of 2 semesters accompanying

Note: A piano skills proficiency exam will be given no later than the end of the fifth semester; students found to be in need of further piano study must enroll in additional applied piano until they pass the proficiency exam.

  • Minimum of 4 semesters of MUSC 1805 

Performance groups for guitar majors: 

  • Minimum of 8 semesters of MUSC 1805  and 4 semesters of large ensemble

Voice performance


Applied major - 16 s.h.

  • No more than 6 semesters of 1000-level applied and 4 semesters of 3000-level applied
  • Present a half junior recital and a full senior recital
Applied minor - 2 s.h.

  • 2 s.h. minor applied piano
  • Students are required to pass a departmental piano proficiency examination. In preparation for the exam, students must enroll in MUSC 1305 , MUSC 1315  (Functional piano for singers) for 2 semesters. Students desiring further preparation may take piano minor, piano accompanying, MUSC 1105 , MUSC 1115 , MUSC 2105 , and/or MUSC 2115  for no credit. 
Performance groups - 10 s.h.

  • Minimum of 8 semesters large choral ensemble
  • Minimum of 2 semesters of opera workshop or theatre
