Scholars Programs


Business Scholars Program


The Business Scholars Program is a competitive academic program jointly sponsored by the College of Business and the Honors College. Under this program, up to ten seats in the MBA/MSA program are reserved (four years in advance) for selected students who are North Carolina residents entering ECU as freshmen in ECU’s Honors College.

Business Scholars benefit from the College of Business Leadership and Professional Development program, a unique business curriculum designed to ensure that students develop the vital leadership skills of critical thinking, value orientation, communication, and team-building. This prestigious opportunity offers a generous scholarship award of $12,000 beyond the scholarship monies awarded by the Honors College (distributed as $1500 per semester over eight semesters).

Admission Requirements


Students wishing to be considered for the Business Scholars Program will first need to be accepted into the Honors College. Admission to the Honors College at ECU is competitive and by invitation. Students wishing to be considered for the Business Scholars Program must have completed the ECU application process prior to the date set by the Honors College. Inquiries should be directed to the Honors College.

Program


Students who are awarded a position in the Business Scholars Program must maintain certain academic standards and participate in various activities to remain eligible for their seat in the Business Scholars entering class. These requirements include:

  1. earning a minimum GPA (both overall and in business courses) of 3.5
  2. maintaining “an acceptable level of personal deportment”
  3. participating in all required group and enrichment activities (periodic meetings with COB mentor, leadership roles, lunches/special events with COB leadership, speakers, Advisory Council members, etc.)

Students in the Business Scholars Program who remain eligible and interested will complete an application to the ECU MBA or MSA program in the first semester of their senior year and will be exempt from the supplemental application fee and the Graduate Management Admission Test requirement. They will receive a letter of acceptance that will enable them to enter the MBA or MSA program after graduation.

Humanities Scholars Program


Humanities Scholars is a unique scholarship opportunity for Honors - and EC Scholars - eligible students who wish to study the following areas at ECU: English, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Foreign Language (French, German, Russian Studies, and Hispanic Studies), and Classical Studies. This program is offered jointly by the Honors College and the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University.

Home to 16 academic departments and 16 interdisciplinary programs, the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences is rich in tradition and innovation. Humanities Scholars benefit from dedicated faculty committed to effective classroom instruction, a model of student access that motivates students from diverse backgrounds, and a mission of service in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences. Humanities Scholars participate in leadership and community engagement opportunities and build close relationships with the Harriot College leadership team, faculty, and advisory board members.

Music Scholars Program


ECU’s Honors College and School of Music have partnered to provide a unique opportunity for outstanding students who wish to major in music. The Music Scholars Program offers a supplemental scholarship disbursed each semester for eight semesters to students who are entering ECU’s Honors College majoring in music. The scholarship is a four-year award above and beyond their Honors College scholarship and includes special leadership and community engagement and mentorship experiences. Freshmen Music Scholars will live and learn in a collegial residence environment.

The School of Music at ECU is one of the premier music schools in the Southeast with accreditations from the National Association of Schools of Music and American Music Therapy Association, an intentionally small and high-quality student body, and some of the finest facilities, resources, and performances in the state. Students who are interested in this elite opportunity must be accepted into the Honors College and the School of Music, which requires a performance audition in addition to the Honors College application.
