The Mathematics, BA or BS /Mathematics, MA accelerated program is initiated while undergraduates are completing the bachelor of arts (BA) or the bachelor of science (BS) degree in mathematics and is intended for outstanding mathematics undergraduates. For this program, graduate student coursework will begin in the students’ fourth year of undergraduate study and be completed with one academic year of study beyond the bachelor’s degree. It is anticipated that a full year of study beyond completion of undergraduate mathematics requirements will be required to complete this program. Mathematics students may apply to the program after completion of a minimum of 75 eligible undergraduate semester hours, and can begin taking graduate courses after completion of a minimum of 90 eligible undergraduate semester hours (120 credit hours are required for the bachelor’s degree in mathematics). Up to 12 semester hours of graduate courses may be counted towards completion of both the BA or BS degree and the master of arts (MA) degrees. The minimum GPA at the time of admission and entry to the program is 3.5 in mathematics courses and 3.0 overall. Students are formally admitted to the master’s degree after all requirements for the undergraduate degree are completed.

Students accepted into the accelerated program must earn a grade of B or above in all graduate coursework to continue in the accelerated program. Students who earn a C in any graduate course will still be able to count the course toward the BS or BA degree, but will not be eligible to take additional courses in the accelerated program.  Students will be able to reapply to the Mathematics, MA program.

Undergraduate students accepted into the Mathematics, BA or BS /Mathematics, MA accelerated program may count up to 12 semester hours in any combination from the following two sets of courses:

  • MATH 5031 - Applied Statistical Analysis (for MATH 4031  )

Admission Process

Students interested in the accelerated program should speak with the graduate program director to determine admissibility into the program. Following this discussion, the student and graduate program director should follow the procedures outlined in Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Program found in the Admission and Readmission section of the ECU graduate catalog.
