Recreation and Park Management, BS/Recreation Sciences, MS

Program Co-Coordinators: 

The Recreation and Park Management, BS /Recreation Sciences, MS (recreation management concentration) accelerated program is initiated while undergraduates are completing the bachelor’s degree. For this program, graduate coursework begins in the students’ fourth year of undergraduate study and can be completed with one academic year of study beyond the bachelor’s degree.

Eligible students accepted into the program may count up to 12 semester hours of graduate coursework towards completion of both the bachelor of science (BS) and the master of science (MS) degrees. Students are formally admitted to the master’s program after all requirements for the undergraduate degree are completed.

The required minimum GPA at the time of admission to the program is a 3.3 overall. Undergraduate recreation and park management students may apply for the accelerated program during the semester they complete 75 semester hours. Before enrolling in graduate courses, eligible undergraduates seeking accelerated status must apply to and be accepted into the accelerated program. 

Students admitted to the accelerated program must earn a B or higher in all graduate coursework to remain in the program. Undergraduate accelerated program students earning a grade of C in any graduate course can count that course toward the bachelor’s degree but will no longer be eligible to take additional graduate courses and will be dropped from the accelerated program. Students will be able to apply to the graduate program in recreation sciences.

Undergraduate students accepted into the Recreation and Park Management, BS /Recreation Sciences, MS accelerated program may count up to 12 semester hours from the following graduate courses towards completion of both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Students take the following 2 courses: 

  • RCSC 6110 - Research Methods in Recreation Sciences (for RCSC 4000 )
  • RCSC 6080 - Recreation Facilities Management (for RCSC 4080 )

Students choose 6 semester hours from the following elective courses:

  • MKTG 6162 - Marketing Management
  • PADM 6120 - Public Budgeting and Finance
  • RCSC 6090 - Aquatic Facility Management
  • RCSC 6100 - Risk Management and Legal Issues in Recreation Sciences
  • RCSC 6120 - Ecotourism and Park Management
  • RCSC 6121 - Tourism Planning and Entrepreneurship
  • RCSC 6130 - Conservation Psychology
  • RCSC 6170 - Youth Development Services and Organizations
  • RCSC 6230 - Trends and Issues in Recreation Management
  • RCSC 6501 - Capstone Experience in Recreation Sciences
  • RCSC 6801 - Special Topics in Recreation Management
  • RCSC 6802 - Special Topics in Recreation Management
  • RCSC 6803  - Special Topics in Recreation Management
  • RCSC 6990 - Supervised Field Experience
  • RCTX 6004 - Disability and Adaptive Sport
  • RCTX 6100 - Leisure, Aging, and Health
  • Other electives as approved by program coordinator

Admission Process


Students interested in the accelerated program should speak with the graduate program director to determine admissibility into the program. Following this discussion, the student and graduate program director should follow the procedures outlined in Accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s Program found in the Admission and Readmission section of the ECU graduate catalog.
