The mission of the Department of Literacy Studies, English Education and History Education is to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers in the areas of reading education, English education, and history education. The department faculty members are committed to providing comprehensive programs, with rich clinical experiences. The programs are designed to produce teachers who are reflective practitioners who provide professional service to the community, the state, and the nation.

The programs are committed to the preparation of teachers who are knowledgeable, reflective, technologically proficient, and skilled in meeting the needs of a diverse student population. Emphasis is placed on service in the improvement of the public schools as well as assistance in the development of educational policy.

The literacy studies area offers many opportunities for professional development in all areas of literacy and literacy instruction. Reading courses are included within many programs, and include coursework leading to a reading concentration and North Carolina A-level reading licensure. READ 1031  is a course designed to increase reading comprehension, efficiency, and study skills, and is offered to students in all majors.

The English education program, in partnership with the public schools, provides comprehensive English education experiences that involve clinical settings. It offers the opportunity for students to pursue the bachelor of science (BS) in English, secondary education.

The history education area also partners with the public schools to provide substantive social studies experiences that involve clinical school experiences. This program offers the opportunity for students to pursue the bachelor of science in history (BS), secondary education.
