Applicants to the master of art (MA) program should have an undergraduate major, minor, or equivalent record of study in English, or for those applying for the technical/professional communication, rhetoric and composition, linguistics or TESOL concentrations, an appropriate undergraduate degree. Applicants to the PhD program should have an appropriate master’s degree. Each entering student is to consult with the director of graduate studies in English at the beginning of graduate studies. At the consultation, the director of graduate studies will review curriculum requirements and options, including concentrations in literature, technical and professional communication, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, multicultural and transnational literatures, linguistics, TESOL, or English studies, and will suggest appropriate courses. Students seeking a concentration in creative writing must submit a portfolio of poems, short stories, or essays to the creative writing faculty prior to admission to the concentration. Students seeking a concentration in English studies must submit a plan of study for approval by the Director of Graduate Studies.
