Elizabeth Swaggerty, Interim Chair

The mission of the graduate programs in the Department of Literacy Studies, English Education, and History Education is to develop teachers’ competencies in the areas of curriculum and instruction and reading/literacy education. Departmental faculty members are committed to providing comprehensive, research-based programs that prepare teachers who are reflective practitioners, competent researchers, and leaders in their fields of study.

The Department offers the Curriculum and Instruction, MAEd with specific concentrations for those holding an undergraduate degree and a teaching license in their field. Students acquire instructional processes and tools that prepare departmental, school, or district teacher leaders in their chosen field. Current concentrations include English education (ENED) with eligibility for 9-12 English education advanced licensure, and history/social studies education (HIED) with eligibility for 9-12 social studies advanced licensure, and birth through kindergarten with eligibility for birth-kindergarten advanced licensure.

The Department also offers an online master of arts in education (MAEd) in reading and literacy, which prepares teachers to become reading/literacy specialists who are able to support K-12 students’ reading and literacy education and serve as leaders in the literacy profession.  Students acquire advanced competencies in foundational knowledge, curriculum and instruction, assessment and evaluation, diversity and equity, the literacy environment, leadership, and practicum experiences.  With a valid North Carolina initial teaching license, candidates who successfully complete this program are eligible to apply for advanced K-12 reading licensure.
