The Department of Biology offers three undergraduate degrees: BS in biochemistry, BS in biology, and BA in biology.

The Bachelor of Science (BS) in biochemistry provides two areas of concentration - biology and chemistry. The BS in biology provides three areas of concentration - ecology/evolution, general biology, and molecular/cell biology. The goals of our BS degrees are to: prepare our students with the knowledge and confidence to apply the scientific method in biochemical and biological research; train our students to communicate scientific discoveries in standard scientific formats; educate our students so they understand, and are able to apply, foundational biochemical and biological concepts necessary for graduate education or a career in the biochemical and biological sciences. The BS degrees are a great gateway for students looking to continue their education in a professional school (e.g., medical, dental, or veterinary), graduate programs or pursue a career that has research expectations.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in biology focuses on a broad scope of biological concepts but differs from the BS in having fewer cognate science requirements, an additional lab requirement, fewer research skills requirements, and an expectation of proficiency in a foreign language. The goals of our BA degree are to: equip students with a comprehensive understanding of biodiversity, cell biology, evolution, ecology, genetics, molecular biology, and physiology; offer students flexibility in their biology education, allowing them to tailor their studies to their specific interests and career goals; prepare them for diverse career opportunities and further academic pursuits. The BA is an excellent choice for students with a double major or who seek careers that involve education, communication, industry, public health, or environmental monitoring.

Admission Requirements

In order to declare a major in biochemistry or biology, a student must satisfy general education requirements as stated in the catalog for transfer to departments in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and must have a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA in all biology and chemistry courses below the 3000-level.
