The Rehabilitation Counseling and Administration, PhD is designed to prepare higher education faculty in rehabilitation counseling and related fields, and/or administrators in rehabilitation, mental health and related health care programs. The program prepares advanced clinical professionals for rehabilitation, mental health and addictions counseling in clinical settings as well. Students select a concentration in rehabilitation and clinical counseling or rehabilitation administration. All students are required to fulfill a one year residency requirement and complete a dissertation under supervision of a faculty advisor.

Admission
Admission to study at the doctoral level requires acceptance by the Graduate School and the department. Department faculty will make a comprehensive review of the each applicant’s qualifications. The following criteria will be considered collectively for admission to the program:
- Earned master’s degree (48 s.h. minimum) in rehabilitation counseling or a related field from an accredited university or college
- Those applying to the concentration in rehabilitation and clinical counseling must have a master’s from a CACREP accredited program or, demonstrate their master’s curricular experiences were equivalent to CACREP entry level standards sections II and II. The applicant must contact the director of doctoral studies to facilitate this process. Specifically, these curricular experiences will cover the content of the following courses: ADRE 6000 , ADRE 6010 , ADRE 6050 , ADRE 6100 , ADRE 6250 , ADRE 6300 , ADRE 6310 , ADRE 6320 , ADRE 6350 , ADRE 6351 , ADRE 6360 , ADRE 6370 , ADRE 6401 , ADRE 6550 , ADRE 6991 .
- Those applying to the concentration in rehabilitation administration must have a master’s in rehabilitation or related field. The master’s degree must include curricular experiences covering the content of ADRE 6000 , ADRE 6010 , ADRE 6050 , ADRE 6100 , ADRE 6200 , ADRE 6300 , ADRE 6401 . Students who have deficits in these content areas will be required to take additional s.h. which will not count toward the degree.
- Earned GPA of 3.5 in all graduate work
- Minimum scores, as determined by the ECU Graduate School, on the quantitative and verbal tests of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The Department also prefers scores at the 50th percentile or higher on the analytical writing section of the GRE. GRE scores must be within the past 5 years
- Two (2) years of post-masters related professional experience is preferred
- Personal statement that summarizes in as much detail as possible the reasons for pursuing doctoral study and doctoral research objectives
- Professional and personal accomplishments
- Two (2) professional references
- Personal interview with the faculty
Degree Requirements
The program offers two areas of concentration. Students select either the rehabilitation and clinical counseling concentration or the rehabilitation administration concentration.
The degree requires a minimum of 58-61 s.h. as follows:
Rehabilitation and clinical counseling concentration - 61 s.h. (minimum)

Students may also elect a specialty area from the list below.
Rehabilitation research (12 s.h.)

Substance abuse and clinical counseling (12 s.h.)

Specialty area to include courses chosen by the candidate and approved by the program coordinator (12 s.h.)
Rehabilitation administration concentration - 58 s.h. (minimum)
Area of focus (12 s.h.)
An area of focus selected by the candidate and approved by the program director is also required.
Note:
**All students must complete doctoral comprehensive exams specific to their concentration prior to enrolling in ADRE 9000 .
Retention Standards
Good academic standing in accordance with ECU Graduate School guidelines is required.
- Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in all required courses for the degree to graduate.
Students not maintaining the criteria above may be placed on academic probation in accordance with Graduate School policies.
In addition, the program has the following specific regulations:
- A minimum grade of S or B or better must be earned in all required and elective courses;
- A grade of U or C or lower must be retaken, with no more than six semester hours of U or C or lower grades being retaken.
Students receiving a grade of U or C or lower in more than six semester hours of required or elective courses will be dismissed from the program in accordance with departmental policies.
In courses graded on the S/U system, the grade of Unsatisfactory (U) is assigned when the equivalency of a C grade or lower is earned. If a student receives a U grade in a course, the student may repeat the course one time. If an S grade is not earned on the 2nd attempt, the student is dismissed from the program.
Comprehensive Assessment Requirement
All ECU graduate programs require students to successfully complete a comprehensive asessment. The assessment requirement for this program is the successful completion of a doctoral comprehensive exam specific to the student’s concentration prior to enrolling in ADRE 9000.
