Student Affairs in Higher Education Certificate

The 15 s.h. student affairs certificate is open to students with baccalaureate or graduate degrees who currently work in, or aspire to work in, the field of student affairs at the university, college, and community college levels. The focus of the coursework is on the preparation of knowledgeable and proficient practitioners who are committed to student success and development, and can work as leaders and change agents within their institutions and within society at large. 

Admission requirements are as follows:


  • Complete the Graduate School online application with paid fee;
  • Submit official transcripts for all colleges/universities where degrees were earned;
  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited academic institution with a minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale. The degree should be related to the area in which the applicant teaches;
  • Submit a Statement of Purpose/Intent that describes a) the applicant’s relevant educational background and work experience; b) short-and long-term goals; and c) specific interests in the graduate certificate program (500 words, double spaced, typewritten); and
  • Submit two letters of reference (professional or academic references preferred).

Electives are to be selected in consultation with the student’s advisor or certificate coordinator.

Portfolio requirement:


In addition to course requirements, all students must complete a culminating portfolio within one semester of coursework completion or in the student’s final semester of coursework.
