The Pharmaceutical Methods and Technology Minor is geared towards students pursuing pharmaceutical, biochemical, or health-related professions. The minor may also assist in providing a strong knowledge base for students planning to pursue a master’s degree in areas such as biomedical science, chemistry, microbiology, and biotechnology.
The minor provides a multidisciplinary approach for students to develop the scientific competencies of 1) experimentation and then analysis and interpretation of resulting data, 2) development of the ability to present scientific information in written and oral formats, and 3) mastery of documentation requirements for carrying out chemical and biological methods under regulatory conditions. Courses in the minor expose students to the experimental methods and techniques commonly used in research, development, and manufacturing in the pharmaceutical field.
The prerequisites for declaring this minor are General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 1150, CHEM 1151, CHEM 1160, CHEM 1161) with a grade of a C (2.0) or higher in CHEM 1150 and CHEM 1160; Organic Chemistry I (CHEM 2750, CHEM 2753); Quantitative and Instrumental Analysis (a grade of B- or higher in CHEM 3250, 3251); and General Biology I (BIOL 1100, BIOL 1101). Note: If the student selects BIOL 3220 for the microbiology option then General Biology II (BIOL 1200/1201) will also be required.
Note: Less than 50% of minor courses can be double-counted in the major.
