Substance Abuse Certificate

The Substance Abuse Certificate is designed to equip graduate students with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to treat persons suffering from alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use disorders as well as process addictions. The goal of the certificate program is to train and prepare graduate students to become competent in working with clients who are experiencing addictions, as well as those who are charged with drug-related offenses. The foundation of the program is based on making sure students understand substance use disorders from a clinical community relational perspective which will ensure competence when working with individuals, families and communities impacted by addictions. In addition, this certificate will allow graduate students an opportunity to comprehend and apply the laws governing substance use and the core functions of substance abuse profession. Students will also learn efficient methods to design and implement effective addiction treatment intervention and strategies for this population.

Applicants seeking admission can be graduate students or professionals holding a master’s degree working in social work and or other related human service fields. Admission is based on completion of the certification application and approval by the graduate program coordinator. Students enrolled in the certificate program must adhere to the program standards of the School of Social Work  and the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Certification Board (NCSAPPB). Certificate recipients will receive 180 contact hours (12 s.h.) of substance abuse specific credit approved by the NCSAPPB.
