Academically and Intellectually Gifted Add-On Licensure

Program Coordinator: Angela Novak (311 Speight Building; 252-328-6649; novaka17@ecu.edu)

Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) is a K-12 add-on (endorsement) to a North Carolina (NC) professional educator’s license through the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Interested students without a teaching license are welcome to enroll, but are not eligible for the licensure add-on. The AIG (K-12) add-on requires successful completion of 12 s.h. of study in the academically gifted education (GIFT) subject area.

Notes:

Successful completion requires a grade of C or higher in all four requisite courses.

With the permission of the AIG coordinator, GIFT 4400  can be substituted for one of the required courses.

Teachers eligible for a North Carolina (NC) professional educator’s license can petition the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI) for the K-12 Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) add-on after successful completion of the four required courses.

Anyone wishing to learn more about gifted and talented learners in the context of the education system is welcome to take the courses, however the AIG add-on is only available through DPI for teachers with a professional educator’s license.

Optional Certificate Available:

Students can earn an Equity and Advocacy in Gifted and Talented Education Certificate  by successfully completing a total of 15 s.h. (5 courses): GIFT 4000 , GIFT 4100 , GIFT 4200 , GIFT 4300 , and GIFT 4400 . A teaching license is not required to earn this ECU-granted certificate.

Successful completion requires a grade of C or higher in all required courses; see the certificate page  for more details.
