Program Coordinator: Paige Everett (252-328-2970; everettje@ecu.edu)

The Elementary Education, BS prepares graduates to teach in the K-6 classroom.

The degree requires a minimum of 120 s.h. as follows:

1. General education requirements including the following - 40 s.h.

(For information about courses that carry general education credit view the General Education Program  section.)

3. Academic concentrations - 12-18 s.h.

Each of the following academic concentrations require 18 s.h. Five of the academic concentrations; however, require general education designated courses or offer electives that may in some cases count toward the general education requirement of the degree. For these five concentrations, a maximum of six semester hours may count toward the general education requirement. Students are encouraged to discuss this option with their advisor prior to developing the four year plan.

Choose one of the following academic concentrations:

a. Academically and intellectually gifted

In addition to a concentration to the Elementary Education, BS, students can add an Equity and Advocacy in Gifted and Talented Education Certificate from ECU and an Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) K-12 add-on to a North Carolina (NC) professional educator’s license through the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI) by successfully completing four (12 s.h.) required GIFT courses.

As part of the 18 s.h. for the AIG concentration, course requirements for both the Certificate and the K-12 AIG (K-12) add-on are met: 12 s.h. of study in gifted (GIFT) education - GIFT 4000, GIFT 4100, GIFT 4200, and GIFT 4300. With advance approval of the program coordinator, GIFT 4400 may be substituted for one required course.

After successful* completion and once the professional educator’s license is earned, teachers can petition DPI for the AIG (K-12) add-on. The Equity and Advocacy in Gifted and Talented Education Certificate must be added to the student’s program of study and is conferred at graduation after successful* completion of the required courses. See the certificate page for more details.

*Successful completion requires a grade of C or higher in all required courses.

The academically and intellectually gifted concentration requires 18 s.h. as follows:

c. Content integration generalist

Choose courses from the areas of educational pedagogy, literacy, mathematics education, and science education, as specified below.

Licensure/Certification Requirements in North Carolina

The curriculum for all ECU Certificates, Degrees, and Minors  have been designed to meet the licensure/certification requirements in North Carolina and prepare students to sit for licensure/certification exams in North Carolina. The various licensure boards in each state are responsible for setting requirements for licensure/certification in their state. Other states have their own requirements, and you’ll want to make sure your program meets criteria in your home state (or state where you intend to work) before you apply.
