HIED 4222 - Inquiry, Learning Theory, Curriculum and Assessment in 6-12th Grade Social Studies Classrooms 3
For residency qualified teachers. RP: HIED 4111 .
Through an exploration of various learning theories, and brain-based research, teacher residents will develop a nuanced understanding of how students learn and how these theories shape instructional choices. The course emphasizes the importance of organizing content for learning, aligning with North Carolina Standards, and leveraging academic language to support student achievement. Candidates will learn to create cohesive unit plans, focusing on compelling and supporting questions that drive inquiry-based learning. Candidates will learn to break down larger inquiries into lesson objectives in order to begin lesson planning. The course also provides comprehensive training in formative and summative assessments, including the design and use of standard assessment items and authentic performance assessments.
