The Department of English offers a bachelor of arts degree in English, minors in English, Creative Writing, Film Studies, and Linguistics, and certificates in Business and Technical Communication and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. English faculty also teach in interdisciplinary programs in Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, Great Books, and Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
In English courses, students develop analytical and writing skills and theoretical and practical knowledge of topics such as: how texts, words, and images shape lives, cultures, and societies; how literature and film help us to grapple with what it means to be human in a complex world; how people learn languages and how languages develop; how texts are created and published; how to communicate persuasively within and outside organizations; how smart critical thinkers find, read, process, and analyze data; and how to use technology proficiently.
