The mission of the Department of Elementary and Middle Grades Education is to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers in the areas of elementary and middle grades education. Department faculty are committed to providing comprehensive programs with rich clinical experiences. Each program is designed to produce teachers who are reflective practitioners providing professional service to the community, the state, and the nation.

The programs are committed to the preparation of teachers who are knowledgeable, reflective, technologically proficient, and skilled in meeting the needs of a diverse student population. The programs place an emphasis on service through faculty participation in the improvement of the public schools and assistance in the development and creation of educational policy for North Carolina, as well as support for scholarship and research/creative activity.

The elementary education program, in partnership with public schools, offers a master of arts in education (MAEd) and M-level elementary education licensure, if all requirements are met. The middle grades education program, in partnership with the public schools, provides comprehensive middle grades education experiences that involve clinical settings. It offers the master of arts in education (MAEd) and a M-level middle grades education licensure, if all requirements are met.

The add-on AIG licensure  option is offered. This add-on licensure sequence leads to a North Carolina AIG add-on license, if all requirements are met.

The Department also offers the Teaching Children in Poverty Certificate . Courses focus on rural poverty and the impact of long-term poverty and/or trauma on students’ development and learning outcomes.
