The School of Music offers a Master of Music (Music, MM) with concentrations in collaborative piano, conducting (choral or instrumental), composition, keyboard performance specialist and pedagogy, music education, music history and literature, pedagogy (vocal), performance (jazz, instrumental, piano, or voice), sacred music (organ or choral conducting), and theory. The music education concentration offers five areas of emphasis including choral conducting, instrumental conducting, music theory/composition, pedagogical studies, and performance.

Admission
All applicants must meet the requirements established by the Graduate School and complete its admission process. Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree or higher from an ECU approved institutionally accredited college or university or an international university deemed to have equivalent credentials as determined by one of our pre-approved foreign institution evaluation servicers, and a minimum average grade of 3.0 in all previous course work.
Applicants for the MM with concentrations in accompanying, conducting (choral or instrumental), keyboard performance specialist and pedagogy, pedagogy (vocal), performance (jazz, instrumental, piano, or voice), sacred music (organ or choral conducting) must demonstrate an acceptable level of musical accomplishment through an audition. Applicants for the MM with concentrations in composition, music history and literature, and theory must submit examples of creative and scholarly work, such as compositions, research, or analytical papers.
All applicants for the MM with a concentration in music education must demonstrate evidence of exemplary teaching and commitment to music education through a portfolio submission. This portfolio will include a philosophy of music education, documentation of exemplary teaching, resume or curriculum vitae, current teaching license, and current writing sample.
The MM degree shall be awarded only after the candidate passes a final oral examination that includes the presentation and defense of a final project or thesis.
