The minor in the indigenous peoples of the Americas (that is, North, Central and South American and the Caribbean region) requires a minimum of 24 s.h. and is housed within the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences. Courses are drawn from three disciplines and no more than 12 s.h. can be taken in any one discipline. It consists of courses in anthropology, art, English, geography, history, and music. The common theme of these courses and this interdisciplinary minor is the lifeways, history, art, literature, and music of the natives of the Americas. Students are encouraged to take prerequisites as part of their general education requirements wherever possible. Prerequisites may also be waived at the discretion of the instructor. Students may choose a maximum of 3 s.h. of independent studies in a relevant discipline and a maximum of 3 s.h. of special topics courses in a relevant discipline. The minor is not open to anthropology majors.
