The Department of Public Health (DPH) offers a master of public health degree, a doctor of public health degree, three certificates in public health, and a dual degree program in medicine and public health. Although housed in the Brody School of Medicine, the DPH collaborates with many departments and programs on both ECU campuses.
Accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH) in June 2007, the master of public health (MPH) program offers three concentration areas: (1) epidemiology, (2) health administration, and (3) health behavior. The MPH program prepares students to address challenges in public health, and to find innovative ways to improve population health, address public health needs of rural, underserved, and minority populations, and to reduce health disparities.
The doctor of public health (DrPH) is a terminal degree for individuals who intend to pursue leadership careers in public health research, practice, or teaching. The DrPH program consists of two concentration areas: (1) environmental and occupational health, and (2) health policy, administration and leadership. Graduates of this program will be prepared for leadership positions in local, state, or federal government public health institutions, nonprofit institutions such as health advocacy or community service, or for-profit institutions such as health care organizations, health research organizations, health insurance, pharmaceutical industry and health-related industries.
The DPH offers three public health certificates: (1) community health center administration, (2) ethnic and rural health disparities, and (3) public health foundations and practice. These certificates programs cater to the skill needs of individuals working in public health or those interested in working in this field.
The DPH also has a dual-degree program that facilitates attainment of a doctor of medicine (MD) and a MPH degree. This dual degree is particularly attractive to physicians who are interested in attaining competencies in prevention and population health.
