Department of Elementary Education and Middle Grades Education

Patricia J. Anderson, Interim Chair

The mission of the Department of Elementary and Middle Grades Education is to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers in the areas of elementary and middle grades education. The department faculty is committed to providing comprehensive programs, rich clinical experiences, and is designed to produce teachers who are reflective practitioners who provide professional service to the community, the state, and the nation.

The programs are committed to the preparation of teachers who are knowledgeable, reflective, technologically proficient, and skilled in meeting the needs of a diverse student population. The programs place an emphasis on service through faculty participation in the improvement of the public schools and assistance in the development and creation of educational policy for North Carolina, as well as support for scholarship and research/creative activity.

The elementary education program, in partnership with public schools, offers two degree programs in education. The undergraduate elementary program leads to a bachelor of science (BS) in elementary education and a North Carolina A-level elementary licensure, if all requirements are met; the graduate elementary program leads to a master of arts in education (MAEd) and M-level elementary education licensure, if all requirements are met.

The middle grades education program, in partnership with the public schools, provides comprehensive middle grades education experiences that involve clinical settings. It offers the opportunity for students to pursue a bachelor of science (BS) in middle grades education and a North Carolina A-level middle grades licensure, if all requirements are met and the master of arts in education (MAEd) and a M-level middle grades education licensure, if all requirements are met.

The add-on AIG licensure option is offered. This add-on licensure sequence leads to a North Carolina AIG add-on license, if all requirements are met. The master of arts in teaching (MAT) program offers individuals with appropriate degrees and coursework opportunities to pursue an initial license through this one-year graduate degree program.
