The mission of the Department of Literacy Studies, English Education, and History Education is to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers in the areas of literacy education, English education, and history education. The Department’s faculty members are committed to providing comprehensive, research-based programs with rich clinical experiences. The programs are designed to prepare teachers who are knowledgeable, reflective, culturally competent, and skilled in meeting the needs of diverse student populations. Leadership in the improvement of the public schools through advocacy and participation in the development and implementation of educational policy is encouraged.

The literacy studies area offers many opportunities for development in all areas of literacy and literacy instruction. Reading courses are included within many of the College’s programs and include coursework that may lead to a reading concentration and/or North Carolina A-Level Reading License. Designed to increase students’ reading comprehension, efficiency, and study skills, READ 1031  is offered to students in all majors.

The English education program, in partnership with the public schools, provides comprehensive English education experiences in diverse clinical settings and offers the opportunity for students to pursue the bachelor of science (BS) degree in English, secondary education.

The history education program partners with the public schools to provide substantive social studies experiences in a variety of school environments and offers the opportunity for students to pursue the bachelor of science (BS) in history, secondary education.
