Accelerated Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages and Literatures/Master of Arts in Hispanic Studies

Program Coordinator: Dale Knickerbocker (3304 Bate Building; 252-328-6521; knickerbockerd@ecu.edu)

The accelerated bachelor of arts in foreign languages and literatures/master of arts in Hispanic studies is initiated while undergraduates are completing the bachelor of arts degree in foreign languages and literatures with concentrations in Hispanic studies or Hispanic studies education and is intended for outstanding undergraduates. For this program, graduate course work will begin in a student’s fourth year of undergraduate study and may be completed with one academic year of study beyond the bachelor’s degree.

Undergraduate Hispanic studies or Hispanic studies education majors may apply to the program after completion of a minimum of 72 undergraduate semester hours and can begin taking graduate courses after completion of a minimum of 90 undergraduate semester hours (120 semester hours are required for the bachelor’s degree in foreign languages and literatures). Up to 12 semester hours of graduate courses may be counted towards completion of both the undergraduate degree and master’s degree.

The minimum GPA at the time of admission and entry to the program is 3.5 in Hispanic studies or Hispanic studies education (SPAN) courses and 3.0 overall. Students are formally admitted to the master’s degree after all requirements for the undergraduate degree are completed. No graduate course in which a grade of “C” is earned may count toward the graduate degree. It may, however, count toward the undergraduate degree. Students who do not maintain a GPA of 3.0 at the time of matriculation into the master’s degree will be placed on academic probation in their first semester in the master’s program and subject to dismissal from the program if they do not achieve a graduate GPA of 3.0 in courses related to their program of study after 9 s.h. of graduate credit attempted.
