The College of Business provides students with the opportunity to pursue the knowledge and skills required to launch and further successful careers in today’s dynamic business community. College of Business graduates are well prepared to pursue positions in diverse organizations including large corporations, small firms and start-ups, nonprofits, or even to start their own businesses.
The college, which consists of five departments and three schools, offers the bachelor of science in business administration (BSBA) in accounting , finance , management , management information systems , and marketing . In addition, The Miller School of Entrepreneurship offers the bachelor of science in entrepreneurship (BS) and the School of Hospitality Leadership offers the bachelor of science in hospitality management (BS). The Thomas D. Arthur Graduate School of Business offers the master of science in accounting (MSA), the master of business administration (MBA), and the master of science in sustainable tourism and hospitality (MS) degrees. Academic programs within the College of Business provide a wide range of options that encourage students to build on their existing interests and strengths while also exploring new directions. The college’s unique leadership and professional development program, combined with a focus on experiential learning challenges, prepares students to become the leaders of the future.
The College of Business supports the business practitioner through its Office of Expert Services, which includes the Bureau of Business Research, Crisp Small Business Resource Center, Academy of Sales Leadership, professional services and executive education, and applied research projects in both graduate and undergraduate classes. In addition, college faculty combine years of professional experience with award-winning teaching and impactful scholarly research to provide students with a world class education.
Accreditation
The undergraduate (BSBA and BS in entrepreneurship) and master’s (MBA and MSA) business programs are accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. Since the primary objective of accreditation and the College of Business is to foster high quality in education for business administration and management, most of the school’s resources are dedicated to its degree programs. Consequently, non-business majors will not be permitted to enroll in more than 30 s.h. of undergraduate course credit offered by the College of Business.
Admission
Upon admission to the university, students may declare an intended major in accounting, finance, management, management information systems, or marketing. Students must meet the following requirements prior to taking 4000-level or concentration courses for the BSBA degree:
- Completion of a minimum of 45 s.h.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 on 4.0 scale.
- Completion of the declaration courses listed below or equivalent course work with a minimum grade of C- in each and a 2.5 average over the eight courses: ACCT 2401 , ACCT 2521 ; ECON 2113 , ECON 2133 ; FINA 2244 ; MATH 1065 , MATH 2283 ; MIS 2223 .
- Once enrolled at East Carolina University, a student will be limited to a maximum of two attempts per declaration course, including course withdrawals after the schedule adjustment period, regardless of the institution where attempted.
Students who have not met the above requirements may take a maximum of 30 s.h. of 2000- and 3000-level business courses.
The admission of a student seeking a second undergraduate degree in the College of Business must be approved by the director of undergraduate programs. At the time of such approval, the director will also approve the specific courses which will lead to the receipt of the second degree.
Readmission
Students applying for readmission to the university who were previously enrolled in the College of Business and who have been out of school no more than three academic years must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 to be eligible for readmission to the College of Business.
Students previously enrolled in the College of Business who have been out of school more than three academic years and students who were previously enrolled in the university but not in the College of Business must meet the requirements for admission outlined in the section above.
Transfer Credit for Upper-Level Courses
The College of Business will not accept for credit upper-level courses (numbered 3000 and 4000 at East Carolina University) taken at a junior or community college. The department chair will determine the applicability of upper-level courses taken at senior colleges in meeting the BSBA degree requirements. No course may count as a College of Business concentration requirement and also count as fulfilling the business core requirements of the College of Business.
